Registration Details How do I register as a student?
Chartered Secretaries Canada will notify applicants of their eligibility following an assessment of their documentation. Once accepted, a student number will be assigned and an invoice will be issued to cover the application fee, annual student membership fee, and any other costs. Payment is due upon receipt in order to maintain your student membership in good standing. Payment may be made by cheque, bank draft or VISA. Your period of registration commences from the date of confirmation of your application and is for one year. Depending upon the number of modules to be studied, the programme should be completed within a four-year period. If a student does not complete the programme within six years Chartered Secretaries Canada reserves the right to cancel the student's registration. At the time of registration you must be employed in the office of a company, partnership, public authority or body, society or institution. In certain circumstances you may be in a college, university or polytechnic, and you should contact the Institute before completing the registration form. This would apply to full time students completing their undergraduate degree. Registering as a student confers no membership or voting rights and carries the status of registered student. Success in the prescribed examinations does not give automatic entitlement to membership and students must satisfy the necessary work experience criteria (see section So Now You Have Passed). As a registered student applicants will receive correspondence from Chartered Secretaries Canada which includes:
Those who register will be expected to adhere to the same code of professional conduct as that required of members and will be subject to the same disciplinary procedures. The Annual Student Membership & Examination Fees for each module are reviewed annually and Chartered Secretaries Canada reserves the right to change the fee structure. Study Guides will only be dispatched to students who have paid. If you withdraw from a course no part of the fee will be returned. If you fail an examination, fail to sit an examination, or withdraw from an examination after the closing date, you will not be entitled to a refund and will be required to pay a re-sit fee. However, if you are unable to sit an examination due to illness, you may be permitted to postpone your examination(s) until the next sitting at no additional cost, on production of a medical certificate. Chartered Secretaries Canada reserves the right to amend the qualifying scheme at any time and will allow a reasonable transition period for the student to transfer to the amended qualifying scheme.
