WORKSHOP - SPEAKER
JANIS A. RIVEN, LLB, BCL, MBA, FCIS Ms. Riven, based in Montreal, has a growing consulting practice on governance and compliance matters with clients encompassing publicly listed and closely held companies, as well as various types of not-for-profits, and is currently a Lecturer at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, where she teaches Corporate Governance. She is a well known speaker both in Canada and abroad at conferences on corporate governance, and has acted as a facilitator for boards and board committees of a number of different organizations seeking to improve their effectiveness. Ms. Riven joined RBC Insurance in 1996 as corporate secretary and counsel, and in 1998, was appointed Vice President, Compliance and Secretary. In this position, Ms. Riven was responsible for establishing corporate regulatory and market conduct compliance programs for the creditor, life and health, travel, property and casualty and reinsurance businesses. She also acted as corporate secretary and developed policies and procedures for the organization’s many Canadian, US and international operating subsidiaries. Ms. Riven is the immediate past president of Chartered Secretaries Canada, the Canadian division of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), an international teaching organization focussed on governance. She also serves as a director on the International Council of ICSA. Ms. Riven is a member of the Quebec Bar and a Fellow of the ICSA. Her other board positions include the Financial Women’s Association and the Stratford Arts Foundation.
